PYTHONS
The most commonly seen python on Magnetic Island is the Carpet Python (Morelia spilota). These non-venomous snakes are known for their distinctive patterns and colors, which can vary significantly.
Carpet pythons inhabit a range of environments, including forests, woodlands, and areas near water. They are often found in trees, where they can easily blend in with their surroundings.
Diet: Carpet pythons primarily feed on small mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles. They are constrictors, meaning they wrap around their prey to subdue it.
Activity: They are mostly nocturnal, coming out to hunt during the night.
While pythons are generally not aggressive towards humans and pose little threat, it's always wise to observe wildlife from a safe distance. If you encounter one, enjoy watching it but give it space to move away.
